Shh....Karl Lagerfeld is bringing Chanel to Macy's today

Fashion review: Karl Lagerfeld's Impulse Collection for Macy's
Recommended: Absolutely!

It's an insider secret that's been pushed in every major fashion magazine - Karl Lagerfeld's Impulse collection for Macy's lands today. Beyond Beautiful Babe reviews the Kaiser's knits and misses.
"Lagerfeld's wicked way with gloves and cut-outs may display a bit too much side-cleavage," says BeyondBeautifulBabe, "but his style is razor sharp. His bi-colored bib dress will probably sell-out in a minute because any smart girl can throw it on in the morning, grab a croissant - assuming you work in Paris - and go. I'm not in love with the TV-static print on the suit, but it's Lagerfeld-blessed, so it too will fly off the hangers. In fact, I predict the entire collection will walk out of Macy's in mere minutes, so get your red cards ready!"

Book Review: Fiction Boot Camp by Creative Writing Now

Title: Fiction Boot Camp
Genre: Non-Fiction

Where to Get It: Pre-order here
Reviewed by: Susan Roebuck

Recommended: Yes

What a joy to read advice on writing fiction and be reassured that, “…all good writing begins with terrible first efforts…” (Ann Lamott). And I thought it was only me. As I get ready to prepare my second novel for submission, reading the text and completing the exercises after each chapter in Fiction Boot Camp have been invaluable. If I need to sum up the course, I can’t do better than use its own subtitle: Whip Your Manuscript into Shape to Give It the Best Chance at Success.

As all good courses should be, it is easy to follow and logically constructed. The first part, Make Your Manuscript Irresistible, is packed with ideas and advice on craft and technique which everyone (including established published authors) will benefit from.
The second part features Advice from Literary Insiders (or people in the know): literary agents, acquisition editors, proof-readers and more. They give insightful and down to earth advice rounded off with a healthy attitude of “be easy on yourself, you’re probably not doing it wrong”. However, it’s interesting to read the most common mistakes they see in manuscripts. These professionals are gentle but firm and emphasize we’re not in the easiest of businesses. Demand for quality is paramount.

After focusing on the chapters regarding revision strategies, I was delighted to discover there’s no need to run for the Valium because I’ve used an adverb or written a paragraph that’s a tad “telly”. Or that because I’m a pantser I’m going to be consigned to writers’ hell (there’s nothing wrong with being a plotter either, I’d better hastily add).

I’m now absorbed in the editing check-lists which are particularly relevant for me. Although I may whine, but I know that, I wonder if I haven’t forgotten just a few tiny guidelines: did I hurry up at the end of the story because I wanted to be finished? Are there any boring parts that drag which the reader will skip? Do I have any hysterical characters? Excellent reminders and I’m ashamed to admit to being guilty of just one or two (ahem).

After the macro comes the micro-inspection: the difference between showing/telling; how to produce correct pacing, rhythm, mood and imagery. We even get down to the nitty-gritty of even more detailed mechanics: sentence structure, punctuation, word usage. The list is endless and indispensable.

The teachings and reminders within the “Fiction Boot Camp” course will stay with me throughout my career and at whatever stage my manuscript happens to be. It’ll be worth dipping into at any time and is a definite keeper for all writers.

Children’s Book Review: The Adventures of Granny Clearwater & Little Critter

Title: The Adventures of Granny Clearwater & Little Critter
Author: Kimberly Willis Holt
Publisher: Henry Holt and Company, LLC
Genre: Children’s Fiction
Where to Get It: Amazon
Recommended: Yes

This story chronicles the lives of a family moving out West during the Great Western Migration. The Clearwater family includes Granny Clearwater, Ma, Pa, Little Critter and two other Clearwater children. The family begin their trek out west on a wagon and accidentally lose Granny and Little Critter (who is a toddler) when the wagon hits a bump on the rugged trail.

Granny and Little Critter have many adventures while trying to reconnect with their family. Granny captures a criminal, delivers mail and even finds gold while teaching Little Critter all of the things her family taught her when she was a little girl.

This book is extremely funny and offers a lighthearted view of some of what the settlers went through when looking for a new home. The back of the book contains “Author’s Notes” which explain terms, such as Western Migration, to children who haven’t yet learned the early years in the west.

This book is aimed at children in 1st through 3rd grades, but was enjoyed by both my 3rd grader and my 4-year-old. The book contains some “old timers” slang that you may need to explain to your child, but offers a wonderful introduction to what life was like during the Western Migration.

Product Review: All Ears

Product Name: All Ears
Retail Price: $14.99
Where to Get It: All Ears Online Store
Sizes/Specifications: 6-ounces- but others and kits are available

Review: The website owner claims "I started making All Ears with my first set of cocker spaniels. After having spent hundreds of dollars on ear infection cleaners and washes; I created All Ears. All Ears worked better than any other cleaner that I tried. My family and friends tried All Ears and loved it. They all continue to order my cleanser for their dogs and cats."

We have a chocolate lab who has a chronic ear infection with odor and I thought this would be a great product to try. After spending hundreds of dollars at the veterinarian's office for products that worked temporarily, I was game for this one. The easy to follow directions came on a piece of 8x11 sheet of paper, the packaging is homemade but very cute and the applicator bottle is easy to handle.

All Ears immediately took away the odor and after a few uses, my dog's ear infection subsided. We are still treated the dog's ears and after two weeks of usage according to the instructions we have noticed a remarkable difference.

I highly recommend this product. While my husband was skeptical, even he was positive with All Ears.

The product line is available here.

Editor's Note: The bottle our reviewer received was a sample-sized bottle. The 6-oz bottle has directions printed on the bottle, according to the product manufacturer.

Children’s Book Review: Little White Rabbit

Title: Little White Rabbit
Author: Kevin Henkes
Publisher: Greenwillow Books (An Imprint of Harper Collins Publishers)
Genre: Children’s Fiction
Where to Get It: Amazon
Recommended: Yes

One bright spring day a little white rabbit sets out from home on an adventure. What does he find? Look! Everything is new. Anything is possible….

Review:  This is a charming story about a little bunny rabbit who allows his imagination to wander as he encounters new places and things on his hopping adventure. Little white rabbit wonders what it would be like to be a different color, to be bigger and what it would be like to fly. There was only one thing little white rabbit didn’t wonder about….but I won’t spoil that for you; you will need to read the book.

My 4-year-old son picked this book up when the bookmobile from our local library stopped by a couple of weeks ago. He enjoyed the sweet story and the creatively drawn artwork. The only thing that both my son and I felt could have made the story better is if the book had been a little longer.

While this book is aimed at 2 to 7-year-olds, I would say it is better for 2 to 4-year-olds. The short length of the book makes it perfect for reading to younger children, but may leave older kids wanting a little more.

Overall, I recommend this book, especially if you have a little one that normally falls asleep before you can finish their bedtime stories.

Review: Recently, a good friend of mine came to visit and gifted me with some wonderfully soft, luxurious fleece bedding for my small animals. They're not only soft, but well designed and the workmanship is fabulous. I asked where she got them and that's when she told me about 'The Cozy Corner'. The founder and design genius of this company is Nicole Wildeman. She, along with her sister and co-owner Joanne Bouchard, create and sell masterpieces specifically designed for your small animal's pleasure. I quickly put several in each ferret and rat cage and watched them curiously examine each one. They demonstrated their approval and by crawling right in and settling down. Within minutes, they were all stretched out with big smiles on their little faces, looking as content as I've ever seen them. Need I say more? Their reaction is far better than any recommendation I could give you. More information on 'The Cozy Corner' can be found on Nicoles Blog and on Facebook. If you have small animals, you owe it to them to check it out.
